While establishing supportive interpersonal relationships with students is one of the most fundamental tenets of effective teaching, it can be particularly important for students from traditionally under-represented backgrounds. Many specific strategies are discussed elsewhere in this Toolkit.

Get to know your students, and let them get to know you.

Build community among students. Students need opportunities to work together, but also often need guidance in how to do that in ways that are equitable and inclusive.

Provide students with support and resources.
- Encourage students to attend your office hours. Some instructors will require, or give extra credit, to students who come to their office in the first few weeks of school; students are more likely to return if they have ever been there.
