Declaring a PSY Minor
Advising Session Required
During the session, minor requirements will be covered and whether or not you are eligible to declare will be reviewed (find advising hours here).
How would my requirements change if I became a PSY major? Students can run a "What If" audit, which shows all of the degree requirements (including graduation requirements) if a student were to declare a new major/minor—including if their completed and in progress coursework satisfy requirements in the new major/minor. Read all of the instructions for the What If audit as they include information for adding either a major or minor. Keep in mind that a "What If" shows whether a student is pre-major/major status in their current major, not in the new major.
Eligibility to Declare a Psychology Minor
University Policies for Minors
- Students must maintain an average 2.0 minor GPA or higher across lower and upper division minor courses.
- Lower division courses may be used to satisfy a minor, prep for your major, and GE requirements, if applicable. However, there are some limits to this rule. We have encountered students with a major and multiple minors which all required PSY 101, for example, but it did not show as being applied to all departments on the degree evaluation.
- Upper division courses in a minor may not also be counted toward a major.
- Upper division courses must be taken for a letter grade to satisfy the minor requirements.
- A minimum of 6 upper division minor units must be completed in residence at San Diego State University.
Minor Declaration Restrictions
- First-term students: Students in their first term at SDSU cannot declare a new major or minor until after Census (about a month after the term begins).
- Previous PSY grades: Students need to demonstrate that they can successfully complete PSY courses to switch into the minor.
- Time to Graduate: Declaring a new major/minor that will extend a student's time to graduate will not be supported. At least 3-4 semesters are needed for minors. Not all courses are offered each semester, therefore, students need to allow at least 3-4 semesters to complete a minor.
- Only one Psychology Major or Minor Allowed. Students cannot graduate with multiple majors or minors in psychology.
Declaration Request Processing
It can take up to a week for a declaration request to be processed within the Psychology Advising Office. We will contact students if clarification is needed or to inform them if a request was denied. If approved, a minor change form will be forwarded to the Registrar's Office. Depending on the time of the semester, it can take up to 2 weeks to process there. Once completed, the new minor will appear on the student's degree evaluation.
