3C: Wrap-up
By completing this module, you have:
- Reflected on what types of evidence will tell you students are learning
- Considered what types of assessments will provide that evidence
- Considered formative assessments that will provide information on student progress toward learning goals
- Ensured your assessments are aligned with your learning outcomes
You should now be able to:
- Identify appropriate observable evidence that will tell you whether students have achieved the learning goals
- Identify the knowledge and skills required to create required evidence of learning
- Ensure a mix of formative and summative assessments
To Do
- Align outcomes and assessments
- Using your notes about the evidence you want to see for each of your CLOs, fill in the first two columns of this alignment grid Download this alignment grid to begin identifying the specific assessments you might use.
- Identify formative assessments
- Start filling in the assessment worksheet Download assessment worksheet to identify the specific knowledge and skills that students will need in order to succeed on each of your summative assessments and consider what formative assessments will help you monitor whether students are on track along the way.
- Use this assessment map worksheet Download assessment map worksheet to confirm that all your outcomes are assessed, and all your assessments connect to your learning goals.
Next Level
- Consider options to provide variation and choice among your assessments
- Establish clear criteria and standards
- To increase transparency, you want to make sure students understand not only what to do but how they will be evaluated. The third column of the alignment grid asks you to begin identifying the specific criteria you will use to evaluate your assessments. A good place to start is to consider what "A", "C" and "F" work might look like.
Keep in mind that course design is an iterative process. Use these "assignments" as opportunities to draft as much as you can, knowing that you will be returning to many of these worksheets at later points of process.
