3A: What evidence will show students are learning?

icon of writing padHow do you know your students are learning what you want them to learn?

For each of your Course Learning Outcomes, consider what specific evidence might tell you if students have achieved that outcome.

[hint: if your CLOs are already written to be observable / measurable / assessable, this may just be a re-statement of your CLO! Conversely, if you cannot figure this out, it may indicate that your CLO needs revising to be more clear and measurable]

For example: For an introductory Economics course, a common Course Learning Outcome is for students to "analyze the impact of government policies on different types of markets"; students could show they have achieved this by providing a correct analysis of government policies on different types of markets.

Note: Deciding how students will provide this evidence (i.e., in what format) is the next step. This exercise is meant to ensure that you are clear what evidence you are looking for first, and that your CLOs are transparently observable.

What does it mean to achieve the CLOs at different levels of quality (i.e., what would be evidence of ‘acceptable’ work and what is ‘exceptional’)?
