1A: Course Overview

The purpose of this program is to assist and support faculty who wish to expand their pedagogical skills to create courses and classrooms that are welcoming for all students. 

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand core principles of effective teaching and learner-centered course design
  • Clarify learning goals:
    • Write specific, assessable course learning outcome statements (CLOs)
    • Identify the domain and developmental level of each CLO
  • Align learner-centered assessments with learning goals:
    • Identify appropriate observable evidence that will tell you whether students have achieved the learning goals
    • Identify the knowledge and skills required to create required evidence of learning
    • Ensure a mix of formative and summative assessments
  • Align learner-centered activities with learning goals and assessments:
    • Identify activities that will provide students with required knowledge and practice to achieve outcomes
    • Develop formative assessments
    • Design effective interactive learning activities
  • Create a learning environment that is supportive, accessible and inclusive for all students

Getting Ready

Before "officially" jumping in, you have a few preparatory tasks, all of which are contained/explained in this introductory module:

  • Familiarize yourself with the Canvas environment and course structure
  • Reflect on what it means to be an effective and inclusive instructor
  • Watch / view material about what it means to build effective and inclusive courses
