1B: What Does It Mean to Design a Course?

Now that we know what an effective and inclusive course might look like, how do we go about designing one?

First, consider how most instructors typically go about putting together their courses. Here are several components of a course (listed in alphabetical order) that one might think about when designing a course.

  • Course-level learning outcomes
  • Course and teaching evaluation
  • Diagnostic and formative assessments
  • Learning activities, assignments and resources
  • Program-level learning outcomes
  • Standards for assessing and grading performance
  • Summative assessments
  • Teaching strategies, techniques and resources

In what order do you believe most instructors think about them?

Now consider: In what order should we think about them? What order makes the most sense if we want to ensure that everything works together? And is that the same as the order you wrote down for the questions above?
