4A. Aligning Activities
"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." - Confucius
"Activities" refers to everything that students will do to acquire the knowledge and practice the skills they will need in order to learn and achieve your intended outcomes. Although listening to a lecture is a common course activity, and an efficient method to deliver content, there is clear evidence that listening alone is rarely the most effective way for students to retain information and learn higher-order skills. Learner-centered activities generally require students to actively engage with course content and with other people.* In this module, we will explore how to engage students through these learner-centered activities.
* In case anyone is not already aware of the benefits of active learning relative to lecture, please read this overview Links to an external site..
