Foster Community and Connection Online
Community of Inquiry (COI) Framework
Community of Inquiry Framework
When you're teaching online, creating a sense of community and engagement is key. The Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework is all about fostering community by focusing on three big ideas:
Social Presence
Social presence emphasizes connection, meaningful conversations, and relationships. In fully online courses, it is vital to focus on interactive activities like intentional discussion posts and personalized project feedback to remind students they are part of a group and not on their own.
Cognitive Presence
Intentional reflective journals, relevant case studies, and video quizzing are all examples of cognitive presence in an online course. Sometimes, we take cognitive presence for granted in exchange for other, more physically obvious forms of engagement and learning. However, a well designed course will require students to engage with materials cognitively in a varied manner.
Teaching Presence
Teaching presence is all about your role in designing, organizing, and facilitating the learning experience in an online or blended course. It involves guiding discussions, providing direct instruction, and creating a supportive environment that fosters student engagement and understanding.
